It is a romantic comedy which produced in 1998. John Madden is the director and the screenplay is written by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard. Stoppard is also the writer of another Shakespeare-related work, the play called ‘Rosencrantz and Guildstern Are Dead’. The screenplay includes many references to original Shakespeare plays and Shakespeare’s times. It sets in London in late 16th century. The movie developes around the forbidden love of William Shakespeare and the daughter of a wealthy merchant, Viola de Lesseps, who has interest in plays. Shakespeare in Love won seven Academy Awards including Best Screenplay, Best Picture, Best Art-Direction and Best Music. It was the first comedy to win the Best Picture award since Annie Hall. The cast includes Gwyneth Paltrow as Viola, Joseph Fiennes as Will, Judi Dench as ‘Queen Elizabeth I’, Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Ben Affleck. ‘A Comedy About the Greatest Love Story Almost Never Told’ is the tagline of Shakespeare in Love. It also has been used in the Victorian Certificate of Education in Australia as an education material.
